Good Guy Good Luck
Episode 1
I've decided to congratulate Fan Wei on his Golden Eagle award win this year by watching his niche drama, which is little-known by international viewers and most likely at home too. And I need to say that I have zero regrets after watching the first episode.
Yes, the drama is weird and not for everyone, but it is definitely the drama for ME. It follows a protagonist struggling with loneliness and trying to find his way into being a valuable member of society as a coping mechanism. Quan Liang's wife left with a lover and abandoned their daughter, and he chose to be a better man and lied to the girl by saying he was the one kicking her away. They moved to the depressive industrial region, where the man started working as a security guard in the thermos factory. The girl grew up and became a doctor. She moved to another city, still holding a grudge against her dad, blaming him for the ruined family. If you think it's a realistic drama depicting the struggles of the working class in the 90s, you are wrong here. It's the light version of Twin Peaks vibes meeting Gilmore Girls sort of characters. From Twin Peaks, it gets the suspense of the remote city with some weird shit happening. As for the characters, they are all weirdos - sometimes toxic, sometimes funny, sometimes both. The loser cop whose bored wife captured the heart of the local gangster. The pretty woman selling steamed buns and supporting her lazy younger brother. Factory workers with potty mouths. The newspaper vendor, who doesn't allow kids to read his stuff for free as if someone is going to buy it anyway. And as if a local circus was not enough, a dangerous gang arrived in the town for whatever reasons.
